The Importance of Patience When Playing Poker

poker

Poker is a card game that tests the player’s analytical, mathematical and interpersonal skills. The game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards and consists of betting intervals that begin when a player, in turn, either calls (puts into the pot the same amount as the previous player) or raises (puts into the pot more than the previous player). Each hand then ends with a showdown where players reveal their cards. The player with the best hand wins the pot.

While there are moments when an unfiltered expression of emotions is justified, in the majority of poker situations it’s better to keep ones emotions in check. The ability to do this in a high-pressure environment like a poker table is an important life skill, not only because it helps one become a better player but also because the emotional stability that poker promotes can be beneficial outside of the game as well.

Another aspect of poker that’s worth considering is the value of patience. Whether you’re playing poker for fun or as a profession, it’s essential that you only play this mentally intensive game when you feel happy and ready to perform at your peak. Otherwise, you’ll likely lose a lot of money. A good poker player doesn’t chase a bad hand, they simply fold, learn from the experience and move on. The same can be said for the majority of life’s ups and downs.
